From as early as 1929, with its first donations to the YMCA and the RSPCA, the Barbados Shipping & Trading (BS&T) Company Limited has been contributing to the welfare and development of the Barbadian community.
However, the early eighties was a turning point for the Group which committed itself to developing a culture of community involvement and social investment. From 1981, shareholders agreed to commit 1% of the net profits of the Group to establish Deeds of Covenant with a number of charities on the island. As a result, the BS&T Charitable Foundation (CF) was launched to support the following areas:
Education
Arts & Culture
Environment
Sports
Health
Tourism
Since the establishment of the Charitable Foundation, the parent company and several subsidiaries within the Group have become synonymous with certain spheres of social life in Barbados. Every year, BS&T Company Limited donates thousands of dollars to some 25 established local charities through this Foundation. In addition, monetary and in-kind contributions from BS&T subsidiaries complement this gesture.
Beneficiaries of the BS&T Charitable Foundation have included civic, non-governmental and community-based organizations; schools & tertiary education institutions; the Church, community support services, sporting associations, clubs & events; and national cultural events.
Natural Disaster Relief: The BS&T Group has also helped, and is committed to providing such assistance, in natural disaster efforts at a national level. In the past, this philanthropic gesture by the Group has also been extended to other neighbouring islands which were affected by adverse climatic conditions. It came to the rescue of the people of Montserrat following the devastation of hurricane Hugo; BS&T has also provided medical supplies to hospitals in the OECS which sustained damage from Hurricane Luis.
